3 Captains…1 Boat!!

Capt. Bill Kassakatis and I were met at the launching site by Capt. Mike Anderson around 7:30AM on Thursday, September 2, 2004.  The water in the river was relatively smooth until we passed Fort Carroll.  The NE winds were blowing against a flood tide and the Chesapeake Bay had some 3 and 4 foot waves greeting us on the western shore.  It would have been difficult to fish under these water conditions so we cross the Bay were the waves were a maximum of 2 foot.

Working birds were bunched up feeding over water columns as deep as 20’.  For the next couple of hours we were bailing some nice blue and rockfish on 4” Bass Assassin Salt Water Sea Shads fished on 1/2 ounce barbless jigheads.  After this stopped we fished structures until 5PM with little action.  Some nice white perch joined the blues ‘in the box’ that will make some delicious table fare.

Fish Story:

Suddenly the drag started pealing off my light tackle spinning reel as a large fish headed under the boat.  After a brief fight the fish came to the top.  All anglers were looking at the water when a 25” class rockfish came to the top then rolled off the hook.  And as usual I was the only one to see this magnificent fish, so you’ll just have to take my word on this one.  My good buddies kept telling me they didn’t see any fish and that I must have been snagged on the bottom…I don’t think so! J

Special Thanks:

Capt. Bill Kassakatis and Capt. Mike Anderson for joining me on this memorable trip.

Tight Lines,

Capt Tom Hughes
